COURSE DESCRIPTION
Learn the fundamentals of mixing, from setting levels and gain staging to EQ, compression, and adding effects. You'll learn how to create a more balanced mix, allow each element to be heard clearly, and understand how FX are commonly used versus more creative ways to apply them. Transform muddy, cluttered mixes into ones with clarity and balance, and learn how sound selection and arrangement choices can help you create better mixes.
Each week, we'll demystify concepts like volume balance, frequency balance, and dynamics, and look at how groups and bussing help bring a mix together into something that feels polished and finished. Through live demonstrations, guided exercises, and project-based examples, you'll develop a more confident, less overwhelming approach to mixing your own tracks. The last session will also include time to share your mixes and get real-time feedback, so you can apply what you're learning directly to your own mixes and finish tracks.
CURRICULUM
Course materials open in full on October 5, 2026, at 12PM PT.
RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE
- This course is taught using Ableton Live 12. The software is offered in Intro, Standard, and Suite versions, and available as a 30-day trial.
- While Ableton Live Standard or Suite is highly recommended, Ableton Live Intro is also compatible with the course.
- Ableton Live Intro and its more limited mixing tools and stock plugins may prevent you from applying everything covered in class, but free third-party plugins can help fill some of those gaps.
-
We strongly recommend taking the All About Ableton Live 12 course beforehand, or having a basic working knowledge of Ableton.
